How to Plan Your Cloud Migration

Posted by Jenna Kominski on Jun 11, 2019 9:45:00 AM

Digital transformation and cloud migration have achieved a symbiotic relationship between applications and delivery of business services: digital transformation extends legacy applications and manual processes into the cloud and the cloud provides the means to more effectively deliver those transformed processes to users anywhere on the planet.

The cloud provides numerous other advantages, such as agility, ease of scale, elasticity, improved resiliency, continuous availability, and integrated backup: capabilities which bring forth both technological and operational advantages to businesses seeking to maximize the value behind their applications.

Challenges of Moving to the Cloud

Despite the advantages of migrating to the cloud, there are numerous challenges associated with moving applications, platforms and services to the cloud, ranging from establishing compatibility, to instituting security, to assuring performance. For example, most legacy applications are not designed to operate  in a cloud environment, meaning that considerations such as the user interface, security challenges and support for databases must be addressed. These challenges can complicate migrations to the cloud and also highlight the importance of having a plan and the appropriate knowledge to execute on that plan, along with the appropriate technology to ensure that plan leads to a smooth cloud migration.

Cloud computing platforms and associated applications are proliferating across enterprises, playing a central role in digital transformation initiatives. There are many paths to the cloud and many public cloud choices, with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure continuing to dominate public cloud market and growth.

Which Path Should You Take?

Normally, having multiple paths and choices proves beneficial for those adopting disruptive technologies, but that is not the case with digital transformation. Here, multiple choices often lead to complexity and compatibility issues that can derail a transformation project. To fully realize the benefits of digital transformation, the ability to match each workload with the cloud target best able to meet  the service level requirements can determine whether a project succeeds or fails. Having a good understanding of management concepts, workload types and platform capabilities proves to be critical for those looking to make a smooth transition to cloud services.

Organizations are adopting cloud computing to accelerate service delivery.
