VMTurbo Operations Manager 5.2 – What’s New
At VMTurbo we apply the micro-economic principles of supply, demand and price to solve a problem that has bogged down IT, well for as long as there has been IT. And just to be clear we don’t talk about economics for marketing’s sake, it is fundamental to how we solve the problem of assuring application performance while maximizing efficiency.
Every quarterly release provides another set of proof points as our customers are able to drive IT innovation to meet business goals—simply because they have gotten out of the traditional break-fix mentality, which does not assure application performance.
So what is new in the Operations Manager 5.2?
Quality of Service (QoS) Adherence
We’ve expanded our demand-driven control platform into the next layer of IT management going beyond assuring application performance by enabling QoS adherence. Differentiated QoS control enables our customers to define application QoS targets (e.g. transactions per second, response time) and meet them with real-time decisions to scale up or out as demand fluctuates. This capability enables our customers to deliver differentiated quality of service to application owners without having to monitor a threshold, segregate infrastructure resources or make arbitrary sizing decisions.
Our hope is that we can change the conversation in every data center from “what resources do you need for this app or project” to “what quality of service are you looking to deliver.”
Expanded Control of the App Layer
In release 5.1 we announced our new Application Control Module (ACM) which expanded control into the application layer with better understanding of Java app server resource demands enabling application aware infrastructure decisions. With this release we’re adding relational databases to ACM – specifically Microsoft SQL and Oracle Database. VMTurbo is now aware of the resource consumption in the database including db memory, transaction log and connection pool as well as the relationships between app servers and database.
With ACM customers get real-time recommendations to auto scale up (provision/decommission instances) or out (app server or database configuration decisions) taking into account the entire stack and resource supply as well as interdependencies between app servers and databases. All with a goal of assuring performance of those applications.
Minimize Network Latency with Network Aware Decisions
Application workloads are no longer restricted to a host, cluster or individual data center. With Arista data center operators are empowered with an advanced network that minimizes bottlenecks and easily scales to tens of thousands of compute and storage nodes.
To assure application performance these operators must now manage the tradeoff between: 1) Placing workloads that communicate frequently close to each other to reduce “east-west” traffic latency and 2) Satisfying workload compute and storage demands to assure performance. We announced our API integration with Arista Networks last year and with this release are launching the Arista Network Control Module. The Arista NCM extends Operations Manager into the Arista Extensible Operating System (EOS) network layer to manage the tradeoffs between compute and storage loads vs. localizing network traffic flow. It dynamically places frequently communicating inter app tiers next to each other to minimize "east to west" latency and provides network aware decisions that shape traffic flow to mitigate buffer overflow risk.
Build the Cloud You Want
VMTurbo seamlessly integrates with OpenStack on KVM, ESX(i), Hyper-V, or any other OpenStack-ready hypervisor so you can deliver an agile, enterprise-scale private cloud. With this release we’ve enhanced our support for OpenStack block storage (Cinder).
We’ve also added integration with Red Hat CloudForms (built on the ManagedIQ open source project). Customers that are using CloudForms and Operations Manager to deploy new workloads to a private or hybrid cloud can rest assured that they will get the best recommendation of where to deploy the workload based on real-time understanding of the workload demand and available infrastructure supply. In other words, deploy right the first time and then continuously control to assure performance all the time.

Expanding the Market to New Entities – SDK
With release 5.1 we launched our first Software Development Kit (SDK) enabling customer and partners to build hooks into components of the infrastructure (e.g. storage, converged fabric or application platform). The next version of our SDK makes it even easier to add mediation to new entities so they become part of the market in Operations Manager. With the increased understanding of the resource supply or demand of any new entity, Operations Manager makes better decisions to assure performance while maximizing efficiency.

With this release we are launching our first SaaS delivery option. Customer who want to use VMTurbo and deploy it in AWS will be able to do so through the AWS Market Place (stay tuned for more detail in the coming weeks). We’ve also made it much easier for our customers to share custom dashboards with other users and have created a new Impact View dashboard designed to help our customers understand the impact VMTurbo has on their data center in terms of improving performance and maximizing efficiency.
