Inside the New Platform: Turbonomic Data Cloud

How many times have you been chasing between tools and products to find out what is going on in your environment? We have seen incredible results with our Turbonomic Application Resource Management (ARM) across thousands of environments, and a few very interesting use-cases kept coming up that customers were experiencing.

Application performance and resource availability is critical both in real-time and over time. You already have the power of application response time in the real-time environment with Turbonomic whether with our own APEX capabilities or with our APM partners including Cisco AppDynamics, Dynatrace, New Relic, AppInsights, direct app targeting for SQL servers and web applications.

Welcome to Turbonomic Data Cloud!

Turbonomic Data Cloud is an entirely new platform designed from the ground up to deliver the power of time-series data with high-cardinality from diverse sources, supporting high-frequency data ingestion and unrestricted tagging. That’s a lot to unpack, but what matters is what you can do with it:

  • Quickly Analyze Trends and Anomalies In a Top-Down Manner

The power comes from being able to automatically stream these on-the-fly analytics from sources including Turbonomic ARM and other 3rd parties and then explore them with both out-of-the-box dashboards and a flexible no-code dashboard creation framework based on the popular Grafana platform.

Imagine being able to find an outage or performance issue and automatically map all the underlying resources that were utilized at the time and then being able to interactively drill down to see if those resources have had persistent issues, or if the application or infrastructure have had persistent issues in certain situations.

Your Data Cloud User Experience

Turbonomic Data Cloud is a SaaS service that is available anywhere on any device, and supports many data streaming sources. Data Cloud is automatically ingesting your Turbonomic ARM platform data and comes with a variety of out-of-the-box dashboards which greet you on the home page.

These are popular views that you will know from how often you are asked to find this information on a day-to-day basis. Because Data Cloud is a SaaS platform, you also gain from the innovation of every customer and the Turobnomic and SevOne community who is continuously driving the creation of new capabilities, dashboards, and more incredibly valuable features.

Right away you have the highest risk applications presented to you including a visual understanding of their performance and whether SLO violations are present in the time period you have chosen.

Then from the bottom-up you are quickly able to see the top VMs which are presenting resource risks that will be affecting application performance and availability.

You can easily choose any application and drill down into a time-series view of application performance (e.g. response time, transaction throughput), then the specific infrastructure resources you application was dependent on at any point in time along that time view.

Down at the bottom of the view is the chart of Turbonomic ARM actions which were which also shows how Data Cloud is fundamentally different. All of the dependencies, relationships, analytics, and actions are automatically tagged as-collected and retained with granularity over the full 13-month data lifecycle by default. No custom coding or configuration needed!

As you see more data inside your Data Cloud instance, you quickly begin to unlock lots of use-cases that are possible because of the power of the underlying platform:

  • Quickly explore any application, and any infrastructure resource over a 13-month history to correlate issues with rich data and automatic application mapping
  • Easily share views and data with teams across the IT organization so developers, application owners, SREs, AppOps, and IT Ops are all on the same page
  • Access the data using any of a variety of external platforms using the Data Cloud RESTful API for visualization and extending into other systems your team already uses
  • Find whether issues are anomalous, or periodic and systemic with all the data automatically tagged for you for easy exploration and correlation

The Power of Unrestricted Tagging

One of the most prominent challenges with diverse, high-cardinality data is that it becomes difficult to keep it and query it due to complexities at scale. Because the data coming into Data Cloud is coming from Turbonomic, all of your applications and infrastructure are automatically tagged for you and you can explore and query across the broad set of granular data which is held by default for 13 months.

You can also create custom dashboards, widgets, and queries using the popular Grafana interface which is supportable by your Turbonomic team and a very active open source community.
